Red Hot Chili Peppers have denied that they have adapted their sound to suit mainstream audiences and have insisted that audiences have instead become open to their music.

The band released their 10th studio album 'I'm With You' earlier this year, their first with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and are currently in the middle of a UK arena tour.

Speaking to the Daily Record, singer Anthony Kiedis said that despite his band's career sales numbering over 70 million, he did not believe that his band had ever adapted their sound to court mainstream success.

He said: "I think the audience became suitable to us over the years. We never made a decision to become more suitable, the audience slowly accepted us for who we are. At the start, we were crass and brash and unpalatable for the masses."

Kiedis also said that he believed the secret to the band's longevity was the fact that they treated every last show like it was their last one. He said of playing live: "It's still one night – that's what it feels like. We never thought about being a rock n'roll band. We only wanted to play one night and that's how we keep it alive. We all have a different type of intelligence and we want to honour the things that put us where we are and that keep us there."

Red Hot Chili Peppers will return to the UK and Ireland next summer to play three huge outdoor shows. The band will play Knebworth Park near Stevenage on June 23, Sunderland's Stadium Of Light on June 24 and Dublin's Croke Park on June 26.
