Lady Gaga hits back after 'Born This Way' is dubbed the 'most pretentious album ever'
Photo: PA
Lady Gaga has responded after NME dubbed 'Born This Way' the "most pretentious album ever".
Oh the irony of winning "Most Pretentious Album Ever" from none other than NME. *eyeroll* I might laugh forever + then return to narcissism.
The singer's 2011 album was among a host of LPs criticised for being pretentious including Metallica and Lou Reed's recent collaboration 'Lulu', The Smashing Pumpkins' 'Machina/The Machines Of God' and Mansun's 'Six'.
Gaga recently revealed that she overcame bulimia to save her singing voice. "I used to throw up all the time in high school, so I'm not that confident," she said.
"And maybe it's easier for me to talk about it now because I don't do it anymore. I wanted to be a skinny little ballerina but I was a voluptuous little Italian girl whose dad had meatballs on the table every night.
"I used to come home and say, 'Dad, why do you always give us this food? I need to be thin. 'And he'd say, 'Eat your spaghetti.'"
The Top 10 on our list was as follows:
1. Lady Gaga – 'Born This Way'
2. Terence Trent D'Arby – 'Neither Fish Nor Flesh'
3. Lou Reed and Metallica – 'Lulu'
4. Lou Reed – 'Metal Machine Music'
5. The Passengers – 'Original Soundtracks (Volume 1)'
6. Mansun – 'Six'
7. KISS - 'Music From 'The Elder''
8. Transvision Vamp – 'Little Magnets Versus The Bubble Of Babble'
9. The Smashing Pumpkins – 'Machina / The Machines Of God'
10. Pete Townshend - 'Psychoderelict'
Noel Gallagher on Chris Martin: He's The Polar Opposite of Me
Mancunian rocker Noel Gallagher has opened up about his relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin after the singer played piano for Noel and his new band the High Flying Birds at the BRIT Awards on Tuesday – and revealed that he’s been trying his hardest to get Martin to ‘share Marlboro Light with him, but to no avail.
ImageNoel has claimed that he is the polar opposite of Martin – with the Coldplay man living a clean cut lifestyle and Noel ‘not giving a shit’. Apparently, Martin had told Noel that he should come along to one of his Yoga classes, but Noel has told the singer that he’ll only attend if he’ll smoke a cigarette with him.
Speaking to The Sun, Gallagher said “He's my mate and the polar opposite of me. He does yoga and doesn't smoke. I'm trying to get him to smoke but he's not having it. I said to him I'll do the fucking crab or the scorpion if he shares a Marlboro Light with me.”
He continued on to say, “But he's not having it. He's taller than me so he'll probably put me in a headlock, roll me into a ball and throw me into a swimming pool,” before adding that Martin was “very thoughtful - the polar opposite of me. He likes to have things perfectly right and I couldn't give a shit,” in reference to their performance at the BRITs on Tuesday.
The former Britpop rivals drank together onboard a boat on the Thames, which had been hired by record label EMI hfor their post-ceremony bash.
The embrace came after both parties confirmed they had buried the hatchet in recent NME interviews. In this week's issue, Damon explained he had a beer with Noel last year and said his former Oasis rival has "great charisma". Meanwhile, in last week's NME, Noel described Damon as being "as mad as a box of frogs" and imagined working with him on a new album. He'd get a load of hip-hop dudes working on, which itself would be fucking mental".
"It's funny to think Blur were last here 17 years ago when we were big rivals," Damon told the Evening Standard. "Isn't it funny how we've both mellowed after all these years? We've buried the hatchet."
Both parties performed at the awards ceremony, with Blur recipients of the Outstanding Contribution award, while Noel walked away empty handed after being nominated in the Best Male Solo Artist category.
A video of the new song, which is titled 'Narc', can be seen by scrolling below:
The track follows the posting of the 44-second long 'Table Tennis Boom Box' which was recently posted.
Earlier this month Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan insisted there was a "drought" of rock'n'roll bands in the charts. According to Contact Music, the singer said he was "glad" he and his bandmates provided an alternative to groups who were "frightened" of making more interesting records, while guitarist Serge Pizzorno claimed that music was "overrun by pop".
Meighan said:
There's a rock'n'roll drought at the moment, so I'm glad we're here. People are frightened of making records that sound good on the radio.
Pizzorno went on to add: "We've been overrun by pop and I hate that indie attitude. Life's too short to give a fuck."
Last year Kasabian claimed they were "an albums band now" and were no longer interested in releasing "big hit singles". The band released their fourth studio album, 'Velociraptor!', in September last year
Last month, Chris Cornell compared Kanye West’s soundcheck to “retarded children” at an Australian festival. This week, he broke up a fight in an airport lounge by stepping straight up in the face of a businessman who used an anti-gay slur. Chris Cornell: He contains multitudes!
According to The New York Post, Cornell was in an Alaska Airlines lounge in the Seattle airport when one man in a business suit, hearing another guy saying something nice about Obama, called the other guy a “queer.” (He might not have realized he was in Seattle. Or maybe that’s just what happens in those fancy airport lounges.) Cornell came and washed away the rain of that nasty comment; he’s quoted as saying, “You’re a [bleep]. You deliberately called him a queer to make him feel uncomfortable in front of a lot of people.” Security then removed the offender from the bar, and Cornell casually mentioned that he was on his way to L.A. to play an Obama fundraiser.
Nice job, Cornell! You really outshined that motherfucker!
And from that fundraiser, which was actually in San Fran, is Chris’ take on “I Will Always Love You” as a tribute to Whitney Houston.

Kings Of Leon to possibly begin writing for new album this year...
Photo: PA
Kings Of Leon have hinted that they could start work on a new studio album this year.
Speaking to MTV, drummer Nathan Followill said the band had repaired their relationship after a tumultuous 2011 and would "probably start kicking around" some new ideas in the studio in the next six months.
The Tennessee stadium rockers were forced to cancel their entire US tour last year after frontman Caleb Followill stormed offstage in Dallas on July 29 and was deemed too ill and exhausted to tour, with his bandmates later plagued by rumours that they wanted to kick him out of the band and were forcing him to go to rehab.
However, Nathan claimed that the band were now on good terms, stating: "Over the holidays, [you] break some bread, have some turkey, everyone makes up. I don't think it was as big as people thought it was, but the press machine takes it and runs with it."
The sticksman also revealed that they had recently purchased a studio in Nashville and were hoping to start working on new material there soon, adding:
We're going to spend the next few months getting that up and running; kind of make it our little clubhouse to get there and just kind of goof off whenever we want to. But, I'd say within the next six months, we'll probably start kicking some stuff around.
Meanwhile, his brother Caleb revealed that he had already started work on new ideas and was in the early stages of the writing process. "I've been writing a lot," he said. "Kinda want everyone to get a little break from each other, but whenever they're ready, I want to play some stuff."
Speaking of his early efforts, he added: "The melodies are really strong, and the lyrics that I have written I think are pretty good, but we'll see. These guys are always a good judge of if I'm going the right way with something or not."
Kings Of Leon released their fifth studio album 'Come Around Sundown' in October 2010. You can watch an exclusive clip from Talihina Sky, a documentary about the band, by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking.
The band will be inducted along with the Faces/Small Faces, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys at a ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 14, and keyboardist Dizzy Reed has said that all those who contributed to the band's seminal album 'Appetite For Destruction' will be there.
Speaking to Billboard, Reed, who joined the band in 1990 and remains in the line-up to this day, said when asked who would be attending the ceremony: "I know that all the original band is going to be there. I don't know exactly what's going to go down. It's one of those things I'm sure will all come together and be really cool."
Reed added though that no talks had taken place about the band's classic line-up actually playing together on the night and that he and frontman Axl Rose had not contacted former members Slash, Duff MacKagan or Steven Adler about the possibility of performing together at the ceremony.
He said of this: "Honestly, we haven't spoken about it. I don't know when or why or how to bring it up. It's not an everyday sort of thing. So we haven't really talked about it, but I'm sure we'll have to at some point."
Reed also said that he thought the band's current line-up would continue to work on new material after they complete a planned summer tour of Europe.
He said of this: "There are some clamoring and rumours that we might be getting some material together here after we do this run, so we'll see what happens. There was so much material that didn't make it onto 'Chinese Democracy'. From what I remember there were a lot of really cool songs; I can only hope that some of that stuff does resurface and get worked out."

Adele: 'I am f@!*ing off for five years'
Photo: PA
Adele is planning a five-year break from music following on from her Grammy success on Sunday.
The 'Someone Like You' singer has revealed that she wants to take time off to focus on her relationship with new boyfriend Simon Konecki, with the idea being to return to the industry when she can write a "happy record".
Speaking to the US edition of Vogue, Adele explained: "I am fucking off for four or five years. If I am constantly working, my relationships fail."
She added:
So at least now I can have enough time to write a happy record. And be in love and be happy. And then I don't know what I'll do. Get married. Have some kids. Plant a nice vegetable patch.
The comments come from the same interview in which Adele stated she's sick of being a "bitter witch" and will never write another album about a break-up.
Adele picked up six awards at Sunday night's Grammys, with '21' producer Paul Epworth was also named Producer Of The Year.
Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep' was named Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year and '21' was awarded the Album of the Year prize. During her speech for the final award, she said "Mum! Girl done good" and, in-between tears, thanked Rick Rubin "who taught me about quality control". She added that "its been the most life changing year" and then, laughingly wiped her nose saying "oh my god, a bit of snot!"
She also scored awards for Best Pop Solo Performance for her track 'Someone Like You' as well as Best Pop Vocal Album for '21', and Best Short Form Music Video for 'Rolling In The Deep'. Her producer Paul Epworth was named Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical for his work with the Tottenham pop soul singer as well as with Foster The People and Cee Lo Green.
Bon Iver scored the gong for Best New Artist while his second, self titled album was named Best Alternative Music Album. After being handed the award for Best New Artist, frontman Justin Vernon admitted that he was "a little bit uncomfortable" with accepting the award, but added that he was still happy to receive it, saying "I want to say thanks to all the voters. Sweet hook up." He also thanked his label, the indie Jagjaguwar.
Foo Fighters sweeped the board in the rock categories, with their track 'Walk' grabbing the gongs for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song. Their track 'White Limo' was named Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance and the album from which the songs were taken, 'Wasting Light', was named Best Rock Album.
Amy Winehouse, who passed away last year, received a posthumous award in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her collaboration with Tony Bennett, 'Body And Soul', while Skrillex received both Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album for 'Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites'.
'Otis' by Jay-Z and Kanye West was named Best Rap Performance while Best Rap Album was given to Kanye West for 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy'. That album's single 'All Of The Lights' was awarded Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration - Kanye West did not attend the ceremony. Chris Brown's 'F.A.M.E' was given the award for Best R&B Album
The band, who released their seventh studio album 'El Camino' in December last year, told MTV that they felt sorry for bands trying to outlive hype and subsequent backlash.
When asked about the 'Video Games' singer's sudden rise to fame and her much-discussed performance on Saturday Night Live, guitarist Dan Auerbach said: "On some level, we've seen that Lana Del Rey thing since we first started, like, all of a sudden this new band would be headlining festivals, and we're like, 'Wait, how did they get that? We've been here for two, three, four, five years and we're still working our way up. But then they're gone. Just as quickly as they get up there, they disappear."
His bandmate, drummer Patrick Carney, added:
It's different for everybody. It took us a really long time to get on Saturday Night Live, and it took her a shorter amount of time. But I honestly feel bad for a lot of bands that are starting out with the way things are… The trends kind of flip over so fast - something's cool and not cool and it all happens within two to three months.
Last week, Del Rey saw her debut album 'Born To Die' go straight in at Number One in the Official UK Album Chart. The LP sold more than 117,000 copies in a week, making the debut the fastest-selling album of 2012 so far, and, in selling more than 100,000 copies, it also outsold the rest of the Top 5 combined.
A new museum dedicated to the life of Johnny Cash is set to open in Nashville later this year.
The legendary country singer and guitarist passed away in 2003 at the age of 71, but would have turned 80 this month. The new museum will be operated by Bill Miller, a collector of Johnny Cash memorabilia, and will contain items donated by Cash's family as well as items from - and the original sign of - The House of Cash, the Johnny Cash museum in Henderson, Tennessee which closed in 1999 and features in the iconic video for Cash's single 'Hurt'.
The former residence of Cash and his wife June Carter Cash, was sold to The Bee Gees' Barry Gibb after their deaths, but burnt down in 2007 while the property was being restored.
The new museum will be situated on Nashville's main strip, Lower Broadway, "right in the middle of the hubbub," explained Cash's son John Carter Cash to AP.
"He's been an incredible supporter of my dad and one of the largest collectors of memorabilia," added Cash's daughter, Rosanne Cash, of the new museum's founder, Miller. "If anybody has the whole structure to put up a museum, he does. So I have a lot of trust in him and I think it's great at this point. I think he'll do something with dignity and class that's historically important, not some kitschy thing. I'm very interested in seeing what he does."
A project to preserve Cash's childhood home in Dyess, Arkansas is also currently underway. The house will be restored to what it looked like when Cash was a child in the 1930s and 1940s.
Liam Gallagher: 'I'd rather be in Oasis than Beady Eye'
Liam Gallagher has admitted that he would still rather be in Oasis than in his current band Beady Eye.
The frontman, who is currently working on new material with his new band, has revealed that though he likes being in Beady Eye, he'd still rather be playing with Oasis and that people have got the wrong idea if they think he likes not being in the band anymore.
If people think I'm going to be happy about the Oasis split, then they’re wrong. Even though I love Beady Eye, I’d prefer to still be in Oasis, because that was my thing. Oasis was my life.
Gallagher also said that though he misses Oasis, he doesn't miss the huge venues they used to play in and that he much preferred the small shows he's been playing with Beady Eye.
He said of this: "It’s been great doing all these little shows, going back to square one. It's good to see the crowd and hear them. Long may that continue. Big gigs are soulless masses of people – I'm glad I've done them, but I don’t miss them. I’ve got nothing to prove anyway."
Gallagher also hit out at "this new disease of indie student music" and said that most of the new bands of today "looked like tramps". He added: "Look at these grungers – they just walk around filthy with matted hair and smelly T-shirts, looking like tramps – where's the park bench and the Special Brew? And I despise this new disease of indie student music – Bloc Party and all that nonsense."
Tragic news hit us today. As Time reports, Soul Train creator/host Don Cornelius was was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, CA home from a self inflicted gunshot wound.
In 1970, Cornelius, a former Chicago disc jockey and radio reporter, launched “Soul Train,” an R&B-themed dance show on WCIU and moved it to syndication the next year with stations in several cities picking it up. The show later moved to Los Angeles and became an instant hit. The show ran in syndication for 25 years before it went off the air in 2006.
Cornelius also suffered personal drama due to bitter divorce proceedings in 2009. The consequence was that Cornelius suffered "significant health issues" and wanted to "finalize this divorce before I die." In 2008, Cornelius was arrestedbeating up his wife. He pled no contest to misdemeanor domestic violence and was placed on three years probation. His probation just terminated and the divorce was granted in 2010. Rest in Peace.
Adele has confirmed that she will make her live comeback at the 2012 Grammy Awards on February 12.
The '21' star released a statement confirming her long-rumoured performing at the ceremony, which will take place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Her appearance will take place shortly before she makes her UK live comeback at the O2 Arena on February 21 for this year's Brit Awards.
The singer said she was "immensely proud" to be playing her first live performance since she went under the knife to have vocal chord microsurgery in America last year, in order to stop recurrent bleeding from a benign polyp. Her condition had forced her to cancel all of her remaining live dates of 2011, as she scrapped 10 scheduled dates in North America and six shows in the UK in order to have the surgery.
She said:
It's an absolute honour to be included in such a night and for it to be my first performance in months is very exciting and of course nerve-racking, but what a way to get back into it all.
Adele also took to Twitter to confirm the news, writing: "Ima be, Ima be singing at the Grammys. It's been so long I started to forget I was a singer! I can't wait, speak soon xx"
Adele is among the nominees for this year's Grammy Awards, having been shortlisted for Album Of The Year for ‘21’ and Best Solo Pop performance.
