TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith died this morning following a battle with lung cancer, according to a message posted on the band’s website.
Last month, Smith, 34, announced that he had been diagnosed with the disease and would be sitting out of the band’s remaining 2011 tour dates.
Smith joined TV on the Radio in 2005, appearing with the group on their 2006 breakthrough album Return to Cookie Mountain, 2008′s critical smash Dear Science, and their latest effort, Nine Types of Light.
TV on the Radio have canceled their next five scheduled tour dates. No word yet on future dates.
